A CUTTING edge fighter jet that can cruise at a speed of about 1,000mph without afterburners will be taking part in this year’s Wales National Airshow.
Swansea Council has confirmed the Eurofighter Typhoon will be returning to the event in the summer.
The Wales National Airshow is taking place on the weekend of Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3. It will be the first time the Airshow has been held on two consecutive years, as Swansea Council strives to make it an annual event.
As well as aerial displays, ground-based entertainment, a funfair and trade stands along Swansea promenade will also form part of the Wales National Airshow.
Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, said: “The Wales National Airshow is the best free event of its kind in the country. Last year, it attracted more than 170,000 spectators, generating over £7.6 million for the local economy. It’s great news for residents, businesses and visitors, which is why we’re determined to try and establish it as an annual event.
“Although the Airshow is still over three months away, the planning has been underway for several months. The Eurofighter Typhoon has been enormously popular at the event in the past, so it’s a coup to have secured its return once again for this summer’s Airshow.
“Local residents and visitors coming to the city for the event can rest assured we’re doing all we can to deliver another world class spectacle in the skies above Swansea. More aircraft and ground-based entertainment will be confirmed over coming weeks and months.”
The Red Arrows have already been confirmed for the 2016 Wales National Airshow. Officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows were formed in 1964. They’ve since performed more than 4,700 displays in 56 countries across the world.
